October 21, 2008 Electronic Subscriptions I: This is the first of two sessions related to electronic publications (Internet subscriptions, CD-ROMs, electronic books, etc.).
Points of discussion included:

*licensing issues
*IP vs. username and password access
*the decision to replace specific sections of a printed text with electronic-only access
*when is it appropriate to convert a standard text to an electronic version (i.e. do users want to or have time to learn how to use an electronic version of a favourite printed text)?
*the need to develop a way for libraries to "lend" a electronic copy of a text to any one of their users, just as they lend printed texts (some publishers have set a very limited number of users and want those users' e-mail addresses in advance so they can issue user names and passwords)
*different viewing software used (i.e. Folio bound views, VitalSource, etc.)
*the need for training, tutorials, and quick reference guides

Specific questions derived from this session will be forwarded to the four core publishers as well as the Queen's Printer. Representatives from those organizations will attend the Electronic Subscriptions II session on November 18 to address these questions.
